Birding Challenge - the shortest Day of the Year 2010

The most interesting observations of this year’s challenge:

  • Lapland Longspur Calcarius lapponicus (photo) in Liepaja – (M.Tirums, M.Strazds);
  • Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur in Liepaja – new wintering species record for Latvia (S.Berzina);
  • Northern Hawk Owl Surnia ulula near Valka town – (G.Grandans, G.Aizupiete)
  • Razorbill Alca torda and 2 Woodlarks Lullula arborea in Liepaja (K.Millers).

4 out of first 5 places took our guides!

The birding challenge „The shortest Day of the Year 2010” has finished. Up to minus 10C, less then seven hours daylight in some places snowy – this was really challenging time for birding. This year only Latvian birdwatchers have participated however hope to see here other birders from Northern countries in the next years.

This year 81 wild bird species were observed (74 in 2009) and 93 species counting both years. The most common species observed were Great Tit Parus major, Jay Garrulus glandarius & Bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula.
